Lija Athletic have been declared CHAMPIONS after a convincing 3-0
victory over minnows Qormi FC. This Youth Knock-Out
final match was played at the Malta National Stadium, in front of a
sizeable Lija crowd and a decorated side for the occasion. The three
goals for Lija were scored by Hubert Friggieri,

remarkable day for the Lija youngsters who had the opportunity to play
at the best stadium in the country and lift the Cup after months of
hard-work and dedication. The boys continued their celebrations near the

2007 -
Yesterday, the
Hon. Malta President, Dr. Edward Fenech
Adami, visitied the Lija training ground where he met
the children and technical/ coaching staff of the Lija Youth
Nursery, together with other persons involving committee
members and parents. The President, who was accompanied by
Ministers and the Lija Mayor, Dr. Ian Castaldi Paris;
expressed his satisfaction at the level our Nursery has
reached and the good work that is being done to develop the
culture of sports in our country, particularly in the
village of Lija. During his visit, the President admired the
work that has now started at the Annibale Preca, Lija
Primary School in which a synthetic mini-pitch will soon be
laid. Besides, the President has already addressed the Lija
Athletic FC member in a separate meeting at the University
Residence in Lija, whereby the Club's President made a short
speech in which he explained to Dr. Fenech Adami, the
tremendous sacrifices and work a committee goes through
along the year. |

2006 -
Lija Athletic suffered their second relegation in a row,
after being relegated from the Premiere Division last
season. Lija were bound to win at all costs their final league match
against the First Division Champions, St. George's F.C., in
order to retain their First Division status for another season. The Reds
have been playing in the top two tiers of Maltese football
for the past 11 years now - a huge success indeed for a small club
representing a small village such as Lija. One must not
forget that throughout these eleven glorious years, Lija
Athletic won three promotions to the Premier league and
except for this season, the Athletic have always challenged
for promotion when playing in Division One. No one will
surely never forget the 5th of
January, 2005, when our modest club pulled off one of the greatest
surprises ever in the local football scene when beating the Maltese
reigning champions of that time, Sliema Wanderers - a
huge success that shall be written with golden letters in the
history books of Lija Athletic F.C.. This season was
particularly disappointing due to the fact that the squad
was constantly plagued by various injuries. In some crucial
matches and direct clashes, Lija also suffered from several
unfair decisions by the match referees. Luck was surely not
on
our side either this season, as all in all the team never deserved a
second consecutive relegation, but our heads should always
be kept high. Through this website, the Lija Athletic F.C.
Committee is trying to communicate and stay in touch with
its members and supporters. We should quickly forget this
season, and start working for the next. The Club is in great
need of help, and there is a continuous cry for some financial
support or sponsorships. Our football Club needs more dedicated people, and
those people who usually argue about unpopular decisions
taken by the Committee should now make themselves heard and
constructively criticise for the good of the Club. |
