The successful Lija Athletic Under 18 players had a
pizza night at the Lija Fc Bar within the club's premises,
yesterday 29th May 2008. Almost all players were present for the
occasion, in which they celebrated together the historical feat of
retaining Section "A" status in the Youth league for the very first
time, after the team was promoted from Section "B" for the first time
last season. All the club committee members were present for the night
as well. In the history of the Club, it never occurred that a Lija
Athletic Squad survived itself in a premiere section of a local league,
thus making this success rather special. On behalf of all the Lija
Athletic FC committee, members and supporters a big round of applause
and well done to the players and coach(es) of the Under 18 Squad
2007-2008. The Presentation Night for the Under 18 lads, as well
as for the Senior team ensues on Friday 6th June at the End of Season

It is official news that the Lija Athletic Fc coach for
Season 2008-2009 is Mr. Ilir Pelinku. Club officials confirmed to
this website that Pelinku was appointed as the new senior team coach,
after he showed interest in the job following some talks these officials had with
him. This will be Ilir Pelinku's second spell as the Lija Ath. Fc coach,
after a fine spell he had with the Premiere league team three years ago,
back in Season 2004-2005. Ilir Pelinku also played for Lija in the
Premiere league, besides Marsa Fc and Qormi Fc. During the past two and
a half years he was coaching First Division side Mellieħa Fc,
with whom Pelinku won a promotion. Nevertheless, the Northerners
suffered and unlucky demotion to the Second Division this year
following a most turbulent season in which his squad was hampered by
injuries. Pelinku is also in possession of a UEFA License "A",
and under his professional guidance, Lija Athletic's main
objective next season is that of challenging for promotion to the First
Division after ending the Second Division league in sixth place this
season. New players aimed to strengthen the current squad, might also feature in next season's Lija team. While
welcoming Mr. Pelinku, the Lija Athletic committee, on behalf of all the
clan, players and supporters, would like to thank coach Anthony
Grech, for his dedication, efforts and hard work during the
season he spent with our club.

:: The
Lija Athletic Under 18 team managed to survive Section "A"
Status after an excellent season in Malta's premiere youth section. Lija
drew their last match vs Ħamrun Spartans 2-2, and this draw
proved to be enough after ninth-placed Mosta lost their last league
match to Valletta.
With this achievement, this
year's youth team has made history! A new milestone has been attained by
our modest club - that of a Lija squad surviving its status in a top
division for the first time in the club's history! Lija Athletic had won
its first match against the then reigning Under 18 Champions, Pietà
Hotspurs. The Under 18s were found occupying second place in the
Standings after three matches into the league. However a series of six
consecutive losses had pushed the squad further down the table. The
going was tough with the likes of football giants such as Sliema W., Hibernians, Valletta etc.,
but the Lija youth team produced entertaining matches and gave a good
account of themselves in almost all the matches played. The most notable
factor to mention in this year's Under 18 league is that Lija Athletic
scored against all teams as the table below indicates. This squad was
described as the "surprise pack" by some journalists as
maltafootball.com also
featured in its news item of Wed. 14 May. The match that will for
surely never be forgotten was the Second Round match against boogie team
and rivals, San Ġwann. In this match, Lija were loosing 0-3 until
the 69th minute but in the space of just thirteen minutes, Lija managed
to score four (4) goals and eventually win a lost match 4-3
» one of the most excellent comebacks ever known and perhaps
record-breaking in the Youth league!! More info and statistics to follow soon ...

The Lija/ Iklin
Under 16 team achieved
a most deserved promotion to YFA U/16 Section "B"
after crushing Żurrieq 6-2 in the final league match of
an unforgettable season. Prior
to the game, Lija just needed one point from this encounter
to secure promotion. It was a most memorable
season for the Under 16 boys, guided by the professionalism
of Nursery Head coach, Mr. Sandro Gatt, assisted by Paul
Mangion. The Under 16 team set no less than four (4) new records
over previous U/16 squads
throughout this successful season. The promotion in itself
is an unprecedented achievement; the Under 16s also
qualified to the Quarter-finals of 'The Good Causes Fund
Cup' - Under 16 Knock-Out for the very first time; they
faced Section 'A' side Pietà Hotspurs. Moreover,
a record number of 56 goals were scored throughout
this season. Earlier on, the team led by coach Sandro Gatt,
had set a new record of fourteen (14)
successive wins (12 consecutive league victories
& 2Knock-Out victories). For more information

:: The January
Transfer season has not been very busy for Lija Athletic so far. The
most notable moves were the release of defender Nicholas Gatt,
who later joined First Division side, Mosta F.C.. Lija's veteran
forward, Glenn Barry has been loaned to another first
division side, St. George's F.C. until the end of season 2007/2008.
Meanwhile, Lija Athletic F.C. secured the services of mid-fielder
Malcolm Camilleri who joins Lija on loan from Gudja United F.C.
Former Lija player, Elliott Navarro has been released by the club
and has very recently joined Mqabba F.C.. Meanwhile, the Lija Athletic football committee is also happy to
announce that Karl Grech's and Bryan Deguara's cruciate operations were
both successful. We augur a quick recovery to both players.

The Lija/ Iklin
Under 16 team edged
closer to promotion towards U/16 Section B after
beating off the stern challenge offered by Fgura United on a
sunny Sunday morning. Lija were loosing 0-1 until the break,
but the boys did not throw the towel and gave a sturdy
performance in the second half that produced two beautiful
goals, the second one being scored in injury time. This win
also means that the Lija Under 16 youths have
set a new record of consecutive victories. The previous
record of successive victories set by the Under 16s
of four seasons ago, under the guidance of coach Andrè
Żammit, consisted of a run of twelve (12) matches (8
consecutive league victories; 2 consecutive
Knock-Out victories & 2 consecutive play-off
victories). Thanks to today's hard-fought victory, the
Under 16s led by coach Sandro Gatt, have
broken this record by achieving no less than thirteen (13)
successive wins (11 consecutive league victories
& 2Knock-Out victories). For more information

The Lija

Section A, yesterday at the Centenary Stadium, when beating off the
challenge of the current Malta Youth champions, Pietà Hotspurs. Lija

elite youth section, and the Reds could not have dreamt of having a
better start to their difficult campaign. Both goals were scored by
prolific forward Mark Cremona. Pietà had equalized momentarily, but the
Lija lads fought bravely to shock the champions with a most unexpected
